Movement matters. For children, non-specific, unspecialized forms of natural movement are essential to the development of their minds, bodies, and personalities. When confined to one specific movement pattern or one specific sport, young bodies are at risk for overuse injuries and various imbalances. Natural movement through the use of tried-and-true play, the kind of physical activity that we promote at Jungle Gym, allows children to adapt to life’s various stressors and surprises.

The Power of Play

At Jungle Gym, we strive to offer an environment where kids are able to reap the benefits of play in a purposeful and strategic way; this is why our kid-centered classes do not mimic the rest of the classes that we offer. Research has shown that purposeful play is not only fun for children, it can help them break down certain barriers that they struggle to overcome as well.

Problem-Solving Skills

One of the benefits of engaging in obstacle course training is learning how to solve problems in a fun and unique way. Unlike the structured environment of a classroom, obstacle course training introduces children to unfamiliar “problems” in a safe environment. With this training style in mind, children cannot fail. They adapt and they learn how to do something physical through trial-and-error without feeling forced, judged, or rushed. They are on their own time clock and are able to progress as quickly or as slowly as they see fit.

Facing Fears & Processing Emotions

Obstacle courses can be intimidating. Ninja gyms and obstacle course gyms are full of interesting pieces of equipment that allow for children to process and face their fears safely. For those with a fear of heights, for example, simply running up a warped wall can provide a sense of accomplishment, of “getting up high,” without the fear of falling. For those with social anxiety, obstacle courses equip the socially anxious with the power of choice; they can choose to be social and play with others or they can run through a course solo while still confronting the fear of being around other people.
